Koning Willem II Stadion

Key facts

Club: Willem II | Opening: 1924 | Capacity: 14,500 seats

History and description

Willem II had been playing at various sites across Tilburg when in 1924 they moved to a site in the south of the city. The new stadium, at that moment called Tilburgsch Sportpark, opened on 9 March 1924 with a match between Willem II and Eindhoven (6-2).

The ground underwent a major redevelopment following World War 2, including the construction of three new stands. The stadium, by then called Gemeentelijk Sportpark, reopened in 1948. The final new stand, the main stand, opened 9 years later in 1957. The stadium could hold 20,000 spectators at that time.

During the 1980s, some small improvements were made to the stadium, which by then had severely deteriorated. Therefore plans were made to completely rebuilt the stadium.

Works started in 1993 with the construction of three new stands. Following various budget overruns, the club needed the financial support of the city of Tilburg to rebuild the main stand, which was completed in 1995.

The new stadium got called Willem II Stadion, to which in 2009 ‘Koning’ was added to make it Koning Willem II Stadion.

How to get to Koning Willem II Stadion

Koning Willem II Stadion is located in the south of Tilburg at about 2.5 kilometres from Tilburg’s city centre, and slightly more from Tilburg’s main railway station, which is located just north of the centre.

It is about just possible to walk to the stadium from the centre, about 30 minutes.

Bus 8 connects the main railway station and city centre with the stadium. Catch the bus towards Het Laar and get off at stop Laarstraat. The journey takes app. 10 minutes. Bus 132 to Breda and 450 to Station Turnhout are alternatives.

If arriving by car, the stadium is easily reached from the A58 motorway. Take exit 11 Tilburg Centrum West. There is a fair bit of parking around the stadium, e.g. at Stappegoor sports centre.

Willem II Tickets

Willem II tickets can be bought online or at the ticket office at the stadium.

Tickets can also be bought at the stadium from 1.5 hours before the start of the match. Willem II does not typically sell out save for the odd high profile match against the Netherlands’ Big 3 or local rival NAC Breda. For these matches some sales restrictions may apply.

Expect to pay from €22.00 for a seat behind the goal to €36.00 for a seat at the main stand for a typical match. Prices will be a bit higher for high profile matches.
